OUR HISTORY
McCool’s Flooring started as a small family business in 1967 and grew through hard work, partnerships with top manufacturers, and multiple expansions to become one of the largest independent flooring retailers in the U.S., with three generations actively involved in the company.
The Birth of McCool's Flooring
Founded by Virgil and Carole McCool in 1967, began as a small carpet installation business. Virgil handled installations, while Carole supplied the materials. They later expanded to a building behind their home in Sharpsville, stocking rolls of carpet for customers.
Expanding
The business grew when their son, Douglas, opened McCool's Remnant Outlet in Kokomo in 1987. While Carole sold roll goods, Doug offered a cash-and-carry service. Both enterprises expanded, becoming household names in Howard and Tipton Counties.
McCool's Carpet Outlet Opens
In 1991, Virgil, Carole and Doug merged into McCool’s Carpet Outlet with a new 25,000 sqft showroom-warehouse in Kokomo – rolls of carpet for larger projects; remnants for one room – all under one roof.
2nd McCool's Carpet Outlet Location
IIn 1994, Doug and wife Carmen opened a second location in Westfield at Village Park Plaza. This location thrived as well, and after five years, relocated to its current location in the heart of Carmel.
Bigger Business, Bigger Building
As the business grew, McCool's Flooring needed more space. They built a new 30,000 sqft facility on the same property, making it the flagship location where all materials are processed and distributed to the southern locations.
Moving to Avon
By 1995, the trio’s success earned them a spot on the Inc 500 list. Expanding to include vinyl, hardwood, and more, they rebranded as McCool’s Flooring. The Avon location, modeled after Kokomo, now serves the communities of Plainfield, Danville, and Brownsburg.
